Suzi's journey

  • Billing Nurse at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital
  • Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Studies
  • Master of Veterinary Studies
"I’m now undertaking a highly interesting and flexible course, dabbling in animal law, animal health policy, management and welfare science, all of which has been ideal for me."

Animal welfare is still fairly obscure and it’s difficult to find a formal course of study. I approached the University of Sydney’s Veterinary Science faculty and after meeting with the wonderful postgraduate coordinator, and thanks to her efforts, an opportunity later materialised. My experience has been that Sydney is open to accept a student with an unusual background and goal. This study will help me gather the skills I need to push forward in my career and advance animal welfare through research or management in the field. Animals deserve a much better lot than most of them get, and the problems are largely institutionalised. I look forward to being a part of an evidenced-based animal welfare movement that will take Australia beyond its current (mis)perceptions about what animals are and what they are not.
